Sudanese Chief of Staff, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has chosen a new prime minister whose name will be officially announced as soon as negotiations with the former premier, Abdalla Hamdok, are concluded, local media reported yesterday.

Alyoum Altali quoted official sources as saying that the new PM was “university Professor, Hunud Abia Kadouf, who is currently the dean of Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws at the International Islamic University in Malaysia.”

The sources added that Al-Burhan had offered the so-called Troika countries during a meeting held on Tuesday that this was the “last chance to consult with Hamdok regarding the possibility of his reappointment.”

In a statement yesterday, Trioka countries – the US, UK and Norway – said they held a meeting with Al-Burhan, where they discussed how “to see Sudan’s democratic transition put back on track.”

“Al-Burhan warned the Troika representatives that the army will announce Kadouf as the new prime minister if talks with Hamdok fail,” sources said, adding that the decision was made “in agreement with the Sudanese political forces and armed struggle forces.”

On 25 October, Al-Burhan announced a state of emergency, dissolved the Sovereignty Council and the transitional ministers, fired the governors, and arrested officials and the leaders of political parties.

Before the military takeover, Sudan was administered by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials which was overseeing the transition period until elections in 2023 as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and the civilian-led Forces for Freedom and Change coalition.
