Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Tuesday, said his country will build two more nuclear power plants after the construction of Akkuyu Power Plant, Anadolu News Agency reports.

According to the report, Turkey is planning to activate the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant’s first unit in 2023, Erdogan said on 9 November during an opening ceremony of a building belonging to the Energy Market Regulation Institute (EPDK).

“When 443 nuclear power plants are still active in the world’s 32 countries, saying ‘Let Turkey not own nuclear energy’ is negligence—if it is not betrayal. It is obvious that those talking about Turkey’s efforts to reach clean nuclear energy have been acting with agendas other than sensitivity towards the environment,” Erdogan said.

On the other hand, the Greek Foreign Minister voiced his fear that the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey’s Mersin could become a new “Chernobyl” in a phone call with US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.
