Detainees 'disappear' after leaked police station torture video

Egyptians families have been unable to contact their jailed relatives in Al-Salam Police Station

Family members of Egyptians held in a police station from which videos of abuse were leaked have lost contact with their loved ones.

Middle East Eye reported that a number of detainees were forcibly disappeared and are believed to have been moved to prepare them to deny the allegations of torture.

Last month leaked videos showed detainees being held in a police station in the Al-Salam district of Cairo hung from a metal grate by their arms.

In other footage detainees have wounds across their chests and back which they say were inflicted by officers hitting them with sticks.

The news site reported eyewitnesses as saying that security forces had imposed tight security measures in Al-Salam neighbourhood, limiting civilian access to the vicinity of the police station.

One relative of a detainee told the site: “I have not been able to reach him by phone or even by bribing the guards. And I haven’t been able to visit him.”
