Sudan’s Defence and Security Council yesterday called for immediate provision of the logistical needs of the signatory movements for peace to evacuate their forces from the country.

The orders came in a meeting by the Council’s technical committee, which was chaired by the Chief of Staff, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan.

In an official statement, the Council said that the meeting had discussed “security and criminal intelligence reasons that touched on the overall security situation in Sudan.”

“The meeting issued a number of directives, most importantly an immediate provision of the logistical needs of the movements that signed the peace agreement to evacuate their forces from the country’s cities,” the statement read.

On 2 February, Burhan announced an agreement to vacate the cities of all armed movement forces “within a week”. They had also signed another government agreement in October 2020 to establish peace with armed movements within the Sudan Revolutionary Front alliance.

The People’s Liberation Movement – North, led by Abdelaziz Al-Hilu and the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdul Wahed Al-Nur, failed to agree to the pact, of which security arrangements included the formation of joint forces between government forces and armed movements, under the name “National Forces for Sustaining Peace in Darfur,” with the aim of maintaining security and protecting civilians.
