The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced on Wednesday that the death toll from Hurricane Daniel, which swept through cities and regions in eastern Libya last month, has reached 4,333 people, including 101 healthcare workers.
This was stated by Hala Khudari, head of the Health Emergencies Team at the WHO’s office in Libya, during an online media briefing on health emergencies in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, which the organisation broadcasted on its official Facebook page.
Khudari said,
What Libya experienced as a result of the hurricane that struck its eastern cities is a very catastrophic matter (…) I was there in Derna and witnessed the destruction myself
She added: Officially reported deaths due to the hurricane have amounted to 4,333 cases.”
She confirmed that “the recovery of bodies is continuing, as a body was recovered last night (Tuesday) 250 km from the shores of the city of Derna.”
