Two American officials announced this morning that the US army thwarted a drone attack targeting its forces at the Ain Al-Asad base in Iraq hours after the Baptist Hospital massacre in the Gaza Strip, which sparked anger across the Arab world.

Reuters quoted American officials, who requested anonymity, that American forces intercepted two drones before they reached their target at the base, which is the most prominent US base in Iraq.

The two officials refused to reveal who they suspected carried out the attack.

The attack came at a time when Washington raised its alert level in anticipation of attacks from groups supported by Iran, given the sharp escalation in tension in the region due to the brutal Israeli campaign on the Gaza Strip, targeting civilians and civilian objects, such as homes, schools and hospitals, resulting in the death of more than 3,200 Palestinian so far.

The situation exploded after a new Israeli massacre was committed yesterday evening when the occupation bombed Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in the Gaza Strip, which was crowded with patients and displaced people. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of nearly 500 Palestinians, most of whom were women and children.

The massacre caused a wave of Arab anger and protests around American and Israeli embassies, especially in Jordan, Tunisia, Turkiye, Kuwait, Lebanon and Egypt.

The massacre also resulted in the cancellation of a four-way summit scheduled for today in Jordan between the country’s King Abdullah II, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and their American counterpart, Joe Biden.
