Israel seeks to set up a ‘tent city’ in the Red Sea resort town of Eilat to accommodate those fleeing southern areas which have come under rocket fire from the Palestinian resistance.
According to Israel’s Maariv news site, hotels in Eilat have reached capacity after nearly 60,000 Israelis who fled southern Israel arrived in the area.
Mayor Eli Lankeri has now ordered municipality staff to submit a plan for the establishment of a tent city that would cover approximately 150 dunams (37 acres). It would be able to cater for 500 people in its first phase.
“The municipal effort requires political assistance and I expect immediate assistance from the government to prepare accordingly and on time,” Maariv quoted Lankeri saying.
