5 'dangerous' prisoners escape jail in Tunisia

Five dangerous prisoners have escaped from jail in Tunisia, the Ministry of the Interior announced today.

The ministry said the administration of the civil prison in Mornaguia had informed it that the detainees escaped at dawn, adding that all security units have been mobilised with the need to intensify search, investigation and rapid inspection, with the aim of arresting them as soon as possible.

Identical sources told Al-Araby that the fugitives were charged with “terrorism and participation in assassinations of political figures in Tunisia.” The ministry also published photos of the escaped prisoners and called on citizens to inform the police when they see them to prevent “terrorist acts.”

According to sources on the local Mosaique FM radio, the representative of the Public Prosecution Office for the Counter-Terrorism Judicial Branch, accompanied by a number of judicial and security officials, went to the headquarters of the civil prison in Mornaguia “to conduct initial inspections and conduct a series of examinations necessary to uncover the circumstances of the escape.”

An investigation has been launched to look into the circumstances surrounding the men’s escape, according to the same radio. Locals have been asked to call the police if they come across the fugitives.
