Tunisian lawyers said yesterday that judicial authorities have released lawyer Mahdi Zagrouba, who has been detained since 13 May due to disputes with security forces during protests at a court in the capital, Tunis.
Lawyers from the defence team stated that the investigating judge had released Zagrouba but would continue to investigate the case involving the assault on two police officers.
Police had arrested after storming the bar association’s headquarters in May for the second time in two days. Zagrouba has been a vocal critic of President Kais Saied.
The Ministry of the Interior had said at the time that “the judicial decision against Zagrouba was due to his physical and verbal assault on two policemen today near the courtroom” days earlier during a protest following the arrest of fellow lawyer Sonia Dahmani, who is also critical of Saied.
