Iraqi military sources announced yesterday that the Ain Al-Asad Airbase, where US forces are located in the west of the country, was subjected to a rocket attack.
An Iraqi army brigadier general said in a statement that an attack using two Katyusha rockets targeted the special wing where US forces are located in the base in Anbar Governorate.
He added that the attack was launched from the Wadi Hajlan area in the Anbar desert, noting that columns of smoke were seen at the military base, while warplanes and reconnaissance aircraft were flying over the military base.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, however Iraqi authorities and US forces had tightened security measures in and around the airbase as they expected the Popular Mobilisation Units (PMU), known as Hashd Al-Shaabi, to strike back after American troops targeted them.
