Saudi taekwondo star Dunya Abu Talib is due to face Israel’s Avishag Semberg, today at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Saudi champion will face Semberg, the bronze medallist at the Tokyo Summer Olympics 2021, in the taekwondo round of 16 in the under-49 kilogramme weight category.

According to media sources, Abu Talib does not intend to withdraw from the fight after becoming the first Saudi woman ever to qualify for the Olympics. She won SAudi Arabia’s first ever taekwondo gold medal at the 2024 Asian Championship.

Last week, Algeria’s Messaoud Redouane Dris failed the weigh-in for his under 73kg bout with Israel’s Tohar Butbul at the Paris Olympics. An investigation is being opened into whether he purposely failed the weigh-in to avoid facing the Israeli player.
