Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has said the investigation into the events of 7 October is a “show planned by the state comptroller in [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s service,” the Times of Israel has reported.
During a meeting held yesterday, Lapid added: “I do not believe in the integrity of this investigation into Hamas’s 7 October attack.”
Accusing State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman of aiding Netanyahu’s efforts to evading the formation of an official inquiry committee, Lapid said the “comptroller is loyal [to Netanyahu], and he initiated this investigation solely to help the prime minister avoid his duty to establish an official inquiry committee.”
“Instead of discussing responsibility and conducting objective investigations, the comptroller should be ensuring that protocols in the Prime Minister’s Office are not tampered with or altered and that an official inquiry committee is immediately formed.”
The Israeli opposition leader concluded: “I assume and hope that those present here are honourable people, but regrettably, I do not feel the same about the Comptroller’s motives for launching this investigation.”
He added: “I will answer your questions, but I am convinced that this investigation is nothing more than a performance staged by the Comptroller to serve Netanyahu.”
The state investigation revolves around the reasons behind the failure of the Israeli army to repel Hamas’s inifiltration of towns around the Gaza envelope on 7 October.
