The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is on track to become a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, with its homegrown AI models set to drive the Middle East’s transformation into a global technology hub. This was emphasized by Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Worldwide Public Sector at Amazon Web Services (AWS), during a recent industry event.

Carlson highlighted the UAE’s growing investment in AI, describing it as a game-changer for the region. “The UAE’s focus on developing its own AI models is about more than technology. It’s about shaping the future of the Middle East as a centre for innovation,” Carlson said. She noted that by tailoring AI models to meet local needs and challenges, the UAE is setting itself apart as a leader in the field.

The UAE has made significant strides in AI development as part of its broader “UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence”, launched in 2017. The strategy aims to integrate AI across key sectors such as healthcare, education and government services, positioning the country as a global AI leader by 2031.

AWS, a key partner in the UAE’s AI journey, provides the cloud infrastructure that enables the development of these advanced models. Carlson praised the UAE for focusing on creating AI solutions that are both cutting-edge and practical for everyday use, particularly in sectors like finance, healthcare and smart cities.

As the UAE continues to innovate in AI, Carlson believes the entire Middle East will benefit from this technological leadership, with the region emerging as a key player in the global tech ecosystem. The UAE’s efforts are part of a broader trend of digital transformation sweeping the Middle East.
