Tunisian President Kais Saied on Sunday appointed new governors to all 24 governorates across the country, appointing nine in areas that previously had no officials appointed, and changing 15 in other governorates less than a month before the upcoming presidential election in October.
The presidency announced on Sunday night in a Facebook post that “Saied decided to make a change in the governors’ corps,” about two weeks after a major government reshuffle, and a month before the presidential elections scheduled for 6 October.
According to the statement, 9 new governors were appointed in governorates that had not had governors for months, namely the capital Tunis, Ariana, Beja, El Kef, Kairouan, Monastir, Mahdia, Sfax and Gabes.
Fifteen governorates – of 24 – had their governors replaced, according to the statement.
The presidency did not clarify the reasons for the changes.
