The Sudanese Sovereignty Council expressed its hopes yesterday of stronger relations and continued cooperation with Turkiye. The comment was made during a meeting between the Vice President of the council, Malik Agar, and the Turkish Ambassador to Sudan, Fatih Yildiz, at the former’s office in Port Sudan.

Agar praised Turkiye’s support for Sudan in all fields, especially on humanitarian issues. He expressed his “gratitude and appreciation to Turkiye’s government and people, for their stance, support and assistance to the Sudanese people during the war” that has been ongoing since mid-April last year.

The statement from the council quoted the Turkish ambassador as saying that, “We discussed the overall situation in Sudan, and what assistance Turkiye can provide to the Sudanese people to alleviate the circumstances that they are experiencing due to the war.”

Turkiye, said Yildiz, is keen to enhance cooperation with Sudan in the fields of agriculture and mining, in addition to advancing and developing cultural and trade relations in the near future. He stressed Turkiye’s determination to continue its efforts to help the Sudanese people and government to overcome the difficult conditions, in addition to increasing humanitarian aid.

“A Turkish ship sailed to Sudan carrying food and medicine for citizens affected by war and floods, as well as needy families,” added the ambassador.

This year’s natural and health disasters coincide with the continued suffering in Sudan due to the ongoing war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces. The war has killed 18,800 people and displaced nearly 10 million, according to the UN.

There are growing international and UN calls to spare Sudan a humanitarian disaster with millions facing famine due to food shortages as a result of the fighting that has spread to 13 out of 18 states.
