Peace was restored to the city of Fnideq in northern Morocco on Monday after clashes on Sunday between security forces and illegal migrants who tried to storm the border fence with the city of Ceuta, which is under Spanish administration, Anadolu has reported.
“After a night of clashes witnessed in the streets of Fnideq between security forces and those trying to migrate en masse to the city of Ceuta,” said news website Hespress, “the atmosphere seemed calm in the coastal city, which has regained some of its normal life.”
According to Moroccan media, security forces have prevented young men from approaching the border fence separating Fnideq and Ceuta since Friday evening, following calls for a mass storming of the fence on 15 September.
The cities of Melilla and Ceuta in northern Morocco, as well as the Chafarinas Islands and other rocky islands in the Mediterranean Sea, are under Spanish administration. The government in Rabat, however, regards them as “occupied Moroccan territories.”
