In its first response to the results of the US presidential election, Hamas said that its position towards the new administration will depend on its policies and the practical actions it takes concerning the Palestinian people, their legitimate rights and their just cause, Ma’an news agency reported.
Hamas expressed regret that all successive US administrations since the occupation of Palestine in 1948 have taken a negative stance towards the Palestinian cause and consistently supported the Zionist occupation in all spheres.
The previous US administration, Hamas asserted, pursued a course favouring occupation and aggression, providing political and military cover for Zionist war criminals, thereby enabling some of the most severe acts of genocide in modern history. This has cemented the role of the United States as a full partner in the killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians, including children, women and the elderly.
The movement called for an end to blind support for the Israeli occupation, urging action to halt aggression against Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and to stop hostilities against Lebanon. It demanded an end to military aid for the occupation and recognition of Palestinian rights.
Hamas further stated that the newly elected US president is expected to heed the voices within American society that have risen, particularly in the past year, in opposition to the Israeli aggression in Gaza. These voices reject the occupation, the acts of genocide and the US’s ongoing support for Israel, it added.
The movement concluded by stating: “The new US administration must recognise that the Palestinian people will continue to resist the oppressive Israeli occupation and will not accept any path that undermines their legitimate rights to freedom, independence, self-determination, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
