Oman is hosting the Socca World Cup 2024, the first time this prestigious six-a-side football tournament is being held in the Middle East. Oman started their world cup campaign on a high note, defeating Italy 3-1 in the opening match at the Sports Makers Stadium, Oman Automobile Association (OAA).

The win secured three crucial points for Oman, who faced the US in their second group-stage match last night, beating them 1-0 and will meet Canada tomorrow, followed by Qatar on Wednesday.

The Socca World Cup 2024 kicked off on Friday with an opening ceremony under the auspices of Sayyid Nadir bin Al-Julanda Al-Said, Secretary General in the Diwan of Royal Court. The event, attended by dignitaries, celebrated the sultanate’s rich culture with traditional dances and team presentations.

Competition has been fierce since day one, with notable victories including South Africa’s 6-2 win over Tunisia, Pakistan’s 3-0 victory over Haiti, and Germany’s 5-0 domination of Bulgaria. Yesterday, Qatar defeated Canada 3-0, while Iran and Ireland drew 2-2.

Oman is currently top of Pool A followed by Qatar, Italy, the US and Canada. A total of 40 teams are competing, divided into eight groups.

A modern stadium built to international specifications has been constructed at OAA to host the tournament. “This state-of-the-art facility reflects Oman’s commitment to providing an exceptional platform for sports events,” Waleed Al-Obaidani, President of Middle East Socca Federation said.

Julia Potter, representative of International Socca Federation, praised the sultanate’s efforts, saying, “Oman’s innovative approach and the new stadium, built to global standards, are commendable.”
