Ali Akbar Velayati, Senior Advisor to the Supreme Leader in international affairs in Iran, said, “Tehran did not expect Turkiye to fall into the trap set for it by America and Israel.”

In a special statement to Tasnim international news agency, Ali Akbar Velayati said, “We hoped that Mr Hakan Fidan (Turkish Foreign Minister), who is an experienced figure in the field of intelligence and foreign policy, would be able to correct some of the mistakes of Turkish foreign policy. However, we did not expect that Turkiye, which has a long history in Islam, would fall into the trap set for it by America and the Zionists.”

He pointed out that “it is surprising that such acts are committed in the name of the Turkish people, who have remained steadfast in their position on Islam with firm faith throughout history.”

Velayati stressed that Iran will continue its absolute support for the Syrian government until the end.

“Today, the number of Syria’s allies is greater than in 2011 (the beginning of the war in Syria). In addition to Iran, there is Russia, the Lebanese Hezbollah – which has become stronger than ever, the Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Forces, which is an amazing force, the heroic Houthis in Yemen and the dear Palestinians. They are all united in supporting the territorial integrity of Syria and its current government,” he stated.

He added, “I advise (US President-elect) Donald Trump to realise that the Democratic administration, which is in a state of decline, has done little to advance US policy globally. Rather, all it does is ignite strife and wars in various parts of the world.”

The Iranian official said,

Whenever the fire of war breaks out, instead of extinguishing it, they pour oil on it. If Trump wants to manage his new term wisely, he must learn from his experience in his first term and realise that the conditions of the world today are more difficult and complex than before. No independent country will submit to his threats and intimidation

Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, visited Damascus last Saturday, stressing Iran’s firm position of standing alongside Syria in its fight against terrorism, and its complete willingness to provide all kinds of support to the Syrian government for this purpose.
