A Commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), General Javad Ghafari, has been stationed in Syria for the past four days to lead a counteroffensive against opposition forces. The move follows a recent assault by rebel factions, according to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, which cited informed sources yesterday.

The report comes days after Tehran announced it would maintain its military advisors in Syria to support the Syrian regime’s forces.

Sources stated that Ghafari has established a joint operations room, claiming the strategy is “carefully designed to repel the attack and push opposition forces to retreat.”

Ghafari assumed responsibility for the Syrian portfolio within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahidi was assassinated in an Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus in April.
