Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi extradited to UAE, lawyer says

Concerns raised over the fate of Egyptian poet Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi, son of Islamic scholar Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, after his lawyer said that Lebanon had extradited him to the UAE. Activists have said the 53-year-old could face a similar fate to journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed by Saudi agents in the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

Abdul Rahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, son of the late preacher Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, was reportedly extradited by Lebanese authorities to the UAE yesterday, according to his lawyer.

Lebanese lawyer Mohammad Sablouh wrote on his Facebook page: “A private jet from the UAE received poet Al-Qaradawi at 2:15pm.”

Sablouh noted that the deportation process was carried out swiftly, suggesting that coordination between Lebanon and the UAE had been “planned for days.”

On Tuesday evening, the Lebanese government announced its decision to deport Al-Qaradawi to the Emirates.

During a Cabinet meeting, Lebanese caretaker Information Minister Ziad Makari stated: “The Cabinet decided to deport the detainee Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi to the UAE.”

Lebanese authorities had recently detained Al-Qaradawi upon his return from a brief visit to Syria. The arrest was based on an Interpol notice issued by the Arab Interior Ministers Council, stemming from a verdict by Egyptian courts accusing him of spreading false news, inciting violence and terrorism. The decision had been issued in absentia.
