Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to extend the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal beyond its current 42-day period in a bid to secure the release of more captives, according to Arabic news sources. During talks in Washington, Netanyahu presented plans that include a controversial proposal for senior Hamas leaders to relinquish power in Gaza and leave the territory.
The first phase of the agreement involves the release of 33 Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Netanyahu’s new proposal aims to extend this phase to secure the additional release of captives, with Israeli officials suggesting the possibility of freeing “2-3 additional hostages, depending on their health condition.”
For the second phase, Netanyahu’s plan includes ending the 15-month aggression on Gaza and releasing Palestinian prisoners whom Israel considers “important” and did not agree to release initially. In return, Israel demands the release of all remaining captives, Hamas relinquishing control of Gaza, and the departure of senior Hamas leaders into exile abroad, including those who would be released from prison.

According to the Walla website, US President Donald Trump’s advisers, who received the initial agreement from the Biden administration, support Netanyahu’s view that the broad outlines need adjustment. During the Washington talks, Trump reportedly told Netanyahu that his goal was to secure the return of all captives, expressing confidence in US envoy Steve Witkoff’s ability to achieve this.
However, Israeli officials quoted in the report estimate the chances of Hamas leaders agreeing to leave Gaza are “very slim”, potentially leading to a collapse of the hostage deal and renewed hostility “for many months”. One Israeli official stated: “If Hamas agrees not to control Gaza, there will be a second stage, and if that does not happen, it will be a continuation of the first stage.”
Diplomatic efforts continue with US envoy Steve Witkoff scheduled to meet Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Miami to discuss the second phase of the agreement. Additionally, an Israeli delegation comprising Mossad and Shabak officials will travel to Doha on Saturday for further negotiations. Israel expects to receive the names of three more captives who are due to be released tomorrow.
