Turkiye and Turkmenistan have signed an agreement to enable the transport of natural gas through Iran, in a significant energy deal which further enhances ties between Ankara and Ashgabat.
On Tuesday, Turkish Energy Minister, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced a new deal between Turkiye’s state-owned pipeline operator, BOTAS, and Turkmenistan’s state-owned, Turkmengaz.
With the agreement aiming to begin transporting gas on 1 March, it will see the natural gas flow from Turkmenistan to Turkiye, reportedly through Iran via its existing natural gas network. Details on the volume of gas to be supplied and the exact terms of transit through Iran have not yet been revealed, but the Turkish Energy Minister last year stated it would be up to 2 billion cubic meters (bcm).
In a statement upon the signing of the new agreement, Bayraktar said that “with this agreement, which we have been working on for many years, we will further advance the strategic cooperation between the two countries while strengthening the natural gas supply security of our country and region”.
