Tens of thousands of Jordanians gathered at Amman’s Marka Military Airport yesterday and in streets to welcome King Abdullah II on his return from Washington where he met US President Donald Trump and expressed his rejection of Trump’s ethnic cleansing plans in Gaza.
King Abdullah met with Trump at the White House on Tuesday and reiterated Jordan’s steadfast position against the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Earlier this month, Trump proposed that Gaza’s nearly two million Palestinian be relocated to “neighbouring Arab countries” including Egypt and Jordan, while the devastated enclave is rebuilt. Later, he said Palestinians would not be allowed to return to Gaza once they leave as the area would be turned into the “Riviera of the Middle East. His position was condemned and rejected by Arab and major countries.
Thousands of Jordanians lined the streets where the royal procession took place, following official and popular calls to welcome the king “in appreciation of his honourable and steadfast positions in defending the Arab nation’s issues, most notably the Palestinian cause and defending Jordan’s interests and stability.”
Later, King Abdullah took to X to thank his “loyal people”, adding that he derives his energy and strength from them.
Speaking to reporters at the beginning of bilateral talks with Trump, the king stressed that achieving stability, peace and prosperity in the region is a collective responsibility.
He pointed out that Egypt and the Arab countries are drafting a plan regarding the future of Gaza, stressing the importance of finding solutions that take into account the interests of all people, including Jordanians and Palestinians,
On Wednesday, Palestinian resistance group Hamas welcomed the Jordanian king’s position as “an extension of Jordan’s firm rejection of displacement, settlement and alternative homeland projects, which seek to obliterate the identity of our Palestinian people and end their just cause.”
