Palestinian Authority security forces assaulted participants in a vigil organised in the city of Ramallah on Sunday as they paid tribute to the former Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed by Israel last year, Quds Press has reported. The vigil was organised as Nasrallah’s funeral was being held in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, five months after his assassination.

The participants raised pictures of Nasrallah and Hezbollah flags. PA police stormed the vigil, confiscated the flags, tore up some pictures, and assaulted a woman, while hurling abuse at other participants.

Journalist Khaled Sabarneh who was there to report on the vigil, said that police officers surrounded him and dragged him to a vehicle. He was detained for a few hours before being released.

Hezbollah organised a popular funeral for Nasrallah and party leader Hashem Safieddine five months after an Israeli air strike killed them and dozens of others in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Palestinian national forces and movements have called for a popular stand to honour Nasrallah. Hamas, meanwhile, called for a participation in Nasrallah’s funeral in appreciation of his support for the Palestinian people in their struggle against Israeli occupation.
