Palestine has welcomed the decision of the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly to extend the mandate of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) until 30 June 2029.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the decision was adopted by the committee responsible for special political questions and decolonisation. The committee expressed its regret that Palestinian refugees have not been able to return to their homes or receive compensation, noting that their situation “remains a matter of deep concern”.

The decision received the support of 149 countries, while 10 voted against it and 13 abstained. It confirmed the importance of allowing the agency to carry out its work “without obstacles”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said it welcomed the committee’s decision, which gained “broad and unprecedented international support”. It added that this support reflects the place of the Palestinian cause in global awareness and signals clear rejection of Israeli colonial policies.
