The Polish city of Sopot, on the Baltic coast, has terminated its twinning agreement with the Israeli city of Ashkelon, becoming the first local authority in Poland to fully cut ties with its Israeli partner in protest against what it described as “genocide in Gaza”.
The decision, reported on Sunday by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, brings to a close a 32-year partnership. According to the paper, Sopot’s move is seen as “a strong political protest” that aligns with the city’s motto: “Sopot – the city of human rights”.
The text of the decision states that “Israel has been carrying out full-scale ethnic cleansing in Gaza since 2023, which has already claimed tens of thousands of victims, including approximately 20,000 children.”
It places “full responsibility” on the Israeli government for what it calls “genocide” committed by its forces.
