Iran’s state television reported on Thursday that Iran has seized two foreign oil tankers in the Gulf, claiming the vessels were smuggling fuel.
The report did not give details about the tankers’ nationality or the flags they were flying.
General Heydar Honarian-Mojarrad, commander of the second naval zone of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said the two tankers were carrying around one million litres of fuel (about 6,300 barrels), including diesel.
He said the vessels were seized near Farsi Island and taken to the port of Bushehr.
Mojarrad added that 15 crew members from the two tankers are now “in the custody of judicial authorities”, without giving their nationalities.
Iran has at times seized oil-carrying vessels in the region on similar charges.
In December last year, Iran seized a foreign oil tanker while it was passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz and detained 16 crew members. Another vessel was also seized in the Strait of Hormuz in November.
