Turkey unveils plan to build eight nuclear reactors

Turkey has announced plans to build eight nuclear reactors as part of efforts to expand its energy capacity and diversify its power sources.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on Wednesday that the country intends to construct four reactors in the northern province of Sinop and another four in the Thrace region.

Speaking in an interview with NTV, Bayraktar said Turkey is currently holding discussions with several countries, including South Korea, Canada, China and Russia, regarding potential cooperation on the projects.

He noted that no agreements have yet been signed, adding that Ankara will select partners based on competitive terms and their ability to contribute to the localisation of nuclear energy infrastructure.

The planned expansion forms part of Turkey’s broader strategy to strengthen energy security and reduce reliance on imported energy sources, while advancing its long-term nuclear energy programme.
