Sudan and Saudi Arabia on Monday signed an agreement to establish the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation and Coordination between the two countries.

The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported that the agreement was signed in the Saudi capital Riyadh. Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem signed on behalf of Sudan, while Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan signed for Saudi Arabia.

According to SUNA, the council aims to provide a higher and more comprehensive institutional framework for managing and developing bilateral relations.

The council will cover 10 main areas, including economic, investment, trade and political affairs. It will also seek to align the two countries’ visions, strengthen the official partnership and facilitate the implementation of joint projects to support development and economic stability.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said the council was established out of the two countries’ commitment to increasing cooperation and coordination, and would serve as an effective institutional platform for developing and strengthening bilateral relations.

It added that the council would provide an institutional framework bringing together relevant bodies from both sides to work towards tangible outcomes through clear initiatives, projects and targets, strengthening cooperation and integration and meeting the aspirations of both countries.

SUNА quoted Salem as saying the council would help strengthen cooperation and integration between the two countries in various fields, as well as address a number of national issues of mutual interest inside and outside Sudan.

He said the signing of the agreement reflected the depth of the historic ties between the two peoples, highlighting the importance of Saudi Arabia to Sudan and stressing that relations between the two countries are witnessing continuous development.
