The European Union’s foreign policy chief has called for Palestinian elections to be held as soon as possible, saying Palestinian institutions need to renew their legitimacy after nearly 20 years without elections.
The EU considers it important to advance the Palestinian democratic process and ensure that citizens can choose their representatives through the ballot box, the EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas said.
She added: “The EU remains ready to support the process, including through our EU Election Observation Mission” to help ensure the vote is fair and transparent and strengthen confidence in its results.
The remarks come amid continued calls from Palestinian and international parties for comprehensive elections to renew the institutions and strengthen their democratic legitimacy.
