Tunisian Prime Minister-designate, Youssef Al-Shahed, announced yesterday the suspension of the Ministry for Public Function and Governance hours after the appointed minister resigned due to an argument.
Al-Shahed decided to “suspend the Ministry for Public Function and Governance along with the related bodies and institutions. This decision will be presented to the Council of Ministers, in accordance with the constitution,” according to a statement issued by the government.
This decision was made hours after Tunisian businessman Khalil Ghariani resigned from the ministerial position less than a week after his appointment as Minister for Public Function and Governance. This angered the Tunisian General Labour Union.

Ghariani was appointed on Saturday as the successor to Ubaid Al-Braiki, a former member of the executive bureau for Tunisia’s General Labour Union, in a move “condemned and considered provocative” by the union.
Ghariani is head of the social affairs committee in the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, which shared the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize with the General Labour Union for their work during the transitional period in Tunisia.
Despite this, there has been conflict between the two parties for many years regarding increasing salaries in the private sector and the government policy.
Ghariani announced to Mosaic FM radio that he is resigning “due to the tension in the political and social atmosphere in the country” in the past 48 hours.
