Moscow warns Palestinian expulsions could escalate tensions

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned Israel over implementation of its military resolution No.1650 which came into effect on Tuesday 13th April. The ministry warned that the resolution which provides for the expulsion of tens of thousands of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank would heighten tensions in the region as a whole.

On Wednesday [14th April], an official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Andre Nesterenko, said that the resolution “raised serious concerns for Russia” and stressed that “this could lead to a sharp escalation in Israeli – Palestinian tensions as well as tensions in the region as a whole and could undermine stability in the Palestinian territories.”


Nesterenko accused Israel of defying the international community saying; “What is considered a particular challenge is that the planned Israeli provocations are taken in the setting of efforts by the international community and above all, in the framework of the international Quartet’s efforts toward the resumption of negotiations”

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called upon Israel to reconsider its recent military decisions which. The Russian Ministry also warned against “any steps that could pre-determine the outcome of negotiations and lead to dangerous escalation of the situation.”
