PA bans protests against negotiations with Israelis

February 10, 2014 at 2:22 pm

The Palestinian Authority has banned protests against the negotiations with the Israelis, claims Maariv newspaper. An anonymous official said that the PA has been “doing its best to kill efforts to start a third intifada at their early stages.” According to the newspaper, this does not mean that Palestinians are not angry with the PA about their bad living conditions.

Moreover, Maariv reported that it has noticed a “strange indifference” by the Palestinians about “Israeli aggression” in the occupied West Bank. For example, Israeli killed two Palestinian youths at Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank last week, but the Palestinian people did nothing.

The official pointed out that the current PA leadership does not support any kind of direct confrontation with Israel. The leadership, he added, is divided into two: the first supports security cooperation with Israel, while the second rejects such cooperation and the continuation of peace talks.

“In the end,” the newspaper reported, “the chosen path of the PA is to continue security cooperation and not to allow the establishment of anti-negotiations blocs that may organise demonstrations in order to engage in clashes with the Israeli army.” The ban on protests covers peaceful demonstrations, which have been supported by the PA in the past, such as those which take place weekly in Bi’lin and Na’lin west of Ramallah.
