UN withdraws international forces from the Golan Heights

February 14, 2014 at 1:07 pm

Israeli newspaper, Maariv, yesterday reported Martin Nesirky, a UN spokesman, as saying that the organization have decided to withdraw their international observation forces from the Golan Heights, in light of the deteriorating security situation and tensions between Israel and Syria.

Nesirky said that approval has been sought in the wake of immediate threats faced by UN observers and which are not commensurate with their role or military preparation.

Maariv also quoted an Israeli military source as noting that “Syrian rebels have control over sites that were originally controlled by United Nations troops”; referring to southern areas of the Golan Heights, which Syrian rebels forced the UN observers to leave.
