Mofaz: We don't need to be recognized as a Jewish state by the Palestinians

Kadima party’s leader, Shaul Mofaz, has called for a regional conference to coincide with the formation of the next Israeli government and US President Barack Obama’s visit to the region. The main purpose of the conference, he said, was to activate negotiations with the Palestinians and the Middle East Peace Process.

According to the website of the Israeli newspaper, Maariv, Mofaz said:

“We do not need the Palestinians to recognize us as a Jewish state, and the negotiations must begin without preconditions.”

He added: “In the event that the Palestinians thwart these negotiations, Israel should consider taking other steps that could drag us to the reality of a bi-national state.”
