Ismail Haniyeh, the elected head of the Palestinian government in Gaza, has congratulated Egypt’s new president on his victory. Haniyeh called Dr. Mohammed Morsi as thousands of Palestinians gathered outside the prime minister’s home in the Shati refugee camp to celebrate the victory of the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate in Egypt.

As night fell, popular rallies and marches were held in Gaza City. Political speeches were expected outside the Palestinian Legislative Council.
The Change and Reform parliamentary alliance sent congratulations to Egypt on its democratic achievements and to the Egyptian people on electing Morsi as their new president. The Hamas-led bloc wished Egypt security, stability and further progress, while hoping that Cairo returns to its traditional political role in the region under Morsi’s leadership.

Gaza’s Islamic Jihad also congratulated the Egyptian people and institutions on the success of the presidential elections. In its statement, the movement congratulated Morsi, wishing him success and calling on him to serve and provide security for his people, and continue to support the Palestinian cause.
