PA will collapse in one month due to Israeli and US sanctions

February 17, 2014 at 1:50 am

A senior Palestinian official has warned that the collapse of the Palestinian Authority is imminent thanks to Israeli and US sanctions imposed in the wake of the UN decision to grant Palestine non-member state status. PLO Executive Committee member Hanna Amira said that the Palestinian movements are taking every measure to obtain replacement financial support for the PA Treasury.

In a press statement, Amira said that the moves were initiated during the recent visit of the Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil Elaraby, during which he demanded the Arab countries to implement their commitments and support the Palestinian Authority financially with $100 million dollars. This was the sum agreed by the Arab states in a number of summits and meetings.

Amira pointed out that Elaraby and the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah have sent several messages to their counterparts in Arab capitals stressing that the overall situation cannot last beyond a month. Anything more and there will be a negative effect on the economic conditions and institutions of the Palestinian Authority, threatening its collapse unless the Arab states meet their obligations and commitments.

The PLO official pointed out that European countries have fulfilled their commitments but have indicated that they are unable to increase their annual support to the PA. Noting also that the PA is contacting other countries around the world, Amira said that the preferred option is still for the Arab states to fulfil their obligations towards the Palestinians.
