The Commissioner General for Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories, Dr Mamdouh Al-Akar, on Thursday, 9th June, presented the Commission’s sixteenth annual report into human rights conditions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to Dr Aziz Dweik, Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council [PLC] and its deputies.
Dr Al Akar, along with a number of lawyers and advisers from the Commission visited the offices of the Change and Reform deputies in Ramallah. The deputies presented a report that is currently being prepared into violations of citizens’ rights carried out in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip by the Palestinian security agencies.
During the visit, a number of other important issues relating to the rights of citizens were addressed such as political detentions and civilian trials before military courts.
At the end of the meeting, Dr Al Akar urged the Speaker to continue discussion of the annual report in Council sessions and take into consideration the report’s recommendations.
