The human rights committee of the Islamic Action Front, Jordan’s biggest political party, have condemned the detention of 18 committee members and supporters by the government and demanded their immediate release.
A statement published on the party’s website stated that the detainees had been held in the past few weeks on account of their political stance on Israel and its hostility toward Jordan and Palestine. Additionally, they were held because they had been fundraising for the besieged Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
The committee described the detentions as “unjustified” and highlighted that they had come “at a time when the Zionist enemy threatens to storm into the holy Al-Aqsa mosque and Islamic sacred places in Palestine.”
According to a statement released on Friday, the arrests took place in Irbid in the north of Jordan, and Amman, the capital and at different times in recent weeks. The party has stated that the detentions contravene national and shari’a law as well as international values.
