Lavrov: We will not support any decision to intervene in Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday that his country has implemented all its pledges regarding the Syrian government’s participation in the Geneva II conference, stressing that Moscow will not pass any resolution in the Security Council that could lead to intervention in Syria under humanitarian pretexts.

Speaking during a press conference with his Eritrean counterpart in Moscow, Russian media quoted Lavrov as saying that the Geneva statement should be the foundation for settling the Syrian crisis. He pointed out that Russia urges Washington to deal with Damascus directly.

The second round of peace talks in Geneva between the Syrian regime and the opposition ended on Saturday without achieving any breakthrough after the government refused to agree to a compromise agenda proposed by UN-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi. The original Geneva statement failed to include the concerns raised by the Syrian government.

Lavrov also claimed that there are deliberate attempts to link the Syrian regime to brutal crimes through lies and the manipulation of facts.

He added that the Syrian National Coalition represents a small part of Syrian opposition and that a number of excluded Syrian opponents have now formed a new coalition that also seeks to participate in the negotiations.
