Egyptian security cancels forum aimed at national reconciliation

April 12, 2014 at 2:43 pm

Egyptian lawyer Montasser Al-Zayat, who is the chairperson of the Moderation Forum for Thought and Culture, has revealed that the security services cancelled an intellectual forum that was scheduled to be convened on Thursday to discuss the need for achieving reconciliation between the post-coup authorities and the opposition.

Al-Zayat told Anatolia news agency: “The security services have prevented the forum’s salon that was scheduled for Thursday evening, without giving any reasons.”

He continued: “The aim of the forum was to talk about national dialogue and reconciliation between the homeland’s different parties. It was organised under the title of ‘National dialogue: Necessity, feasibility and the future’s horizons’, where a group of intellectuals, politicians and opinion makers from both sides were invited.”

He pointed out that the monthly forum brings together key figures from the various intellectual and political trends who are known for their integrity and objectivity. “Today’s meeting was aimed at getting over the tension between the parties,” he said.

Since the July 2013 military coup that ousted Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Egyptian society has grown increasingly divided, with the post-coup authorities waging a brutal crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood and anti-coup protesters.
