Kuwait asks for help from Algeria to promote meditation with Qatar

A senior Kuwaiti official has travelled to Algeria to ask for help boosting his country’s mediation efforts aiming to resolve an impasse between a number of Gulf States with Qatar, senior Algerian sources have revealed to Anadolu news agency.

The Algerian sources said: “A senior official from the ruling family in Kuwait arrived in Algeria on Wednesday evening for an urgent meeting. He met Prime Minister Abdul-Malik Sallal and other officials from the President’s office.” The sources did not mention the name of the Kuwaiti official.

According to the Algerian sources the Kuwaiti official asked for Algeria to boost his country’s mediation efforts to end the latest impasse between the States of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Based on the fact that Algeria is the only Arab country that maintains good relations with all states of the GCC, including Qatar, the Kuwaiti official asked for its help to solve this crisis.

The Algerian officials accepted the demand; according to the Turkish news agency: “Immediately, and away from the spotlight, Algeria begun to make contact with a number of GCC members in order to bring the diplomatic crisis to an end. The results of this contact are not yet known.”

Three GCC members, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE revoked their ambassadors from Doha last Wednesday. They said that the revocation was based on disputes over the GCC issue, but Qatar reiterated that the main reason was its stance towards the military coup in Egypt.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE candidly support the military coup in Egypt and paid billions of US dollars to boost it. Both countries host remnants of ousted Arab regimes, while Qatar hosts politicians and intellectuals who oppose the coup in Egypt.

They previously asked Qatar to oblige Al-Jazeera, the outspoken TV Channel against authoritarianism in the Arab countries, to calm down its tone regarding the military coup in Egypt.
