Hamas: US did its best to sabotage the reconciliation

May 13, 2014 at 11:50 am

Senior member of Hamas’s political bureau Mousa Abu-Marzouk said on Monday that the US had attempted to sabotage the internal Palestinian reconciliation.

In a meeting with intellectuals and writers in Gaza, Abu-Marzouk did not disclose any new information on American efforts to undermine the agreement between his movement and Fatah, but the US and Israel have both candidly stated that they are opposed to the reconciliation.

Abu-Marzouk acknowledged that there are still a lot of obstacles in the way of reconciliation, but insisted that the Palestinian factions could overcome most of them.

He expects that Hamas and Fatah would proceed along the path of reconciliation, thus ending the seven years of division. He denied the accusation that his movement had only agreed to reconciliation because of the current financial crisis. “It was because of the people’s interest,” Qatar’s Al-Sharq newspaper quoted him as saying.

To reorganise the Palestinian principles, Abu-Marzouk said that there is a need to form a Constituent Assembly to reorder all the Palestinian organisations and write a new constitution.
