Jordan warns Israel that settlement construction threaten the peace agreement

October 27, 2014 at 2:31 pm

The Jordanian government warned Israel that the peace agreement that was signed by both countries more than 20 years ago is currently under threat due to the continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank and Jerusalem as well as Israel’s attempts to change Al-Aqsa Mosque’s governance.

During a ceremony celebrating the signing of the peace agreement the Jordanian ambassador to Israel, Walid Obeidat, warned Tel Aviv that “Israel’s actions are not in accordance with international and humanitarian law. If such actions continue, they will threaten the status of the peace agreement between Israel and Jordan”.

Obeidat’s statements were in reference to the Israeli far right’s efforts to change the status quo in Jerusalem and the area surrounding Al-Aqsa Mosque by building more settlements on Palestinian land in the Holy City.
