Probe over corruption scandal within Yisrael Beytenu to proceed

December 27, 2014 at 3:49 pm

Head of the Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home) party, Avigdor Lieberman, approved on Friday measures to begin an investigation into corruption involving several members of his party.

Lieberman, who is also the incumbent Israeli foreign minister said there are “shadowy forces” trying to infringe on the rights of Yisrael Beytenu to contest the elections. However, “As far as our party is concerned,” he added, “no elections go by without an investigation.”

Israeli media sources reported that Lieberman’s party is taking pre-emptive measures after the country’s police announced the detention of a number of the party’s senior members over a major bribery scandal.

Lieberman said that he was “certain” that the members of his party are innocent and that he preferred not to speak about these people while they were being investigated because “in a democratic society everyone is innocent until proven otherwise.”
