Bottled up Gazans, float on plastics

Five Palestinians in Gaza got a lot of bottle and made a boat with it.

Residents of the coastal enclave which has suffered under an eight year Israeli siege “wanted to break the depression that comes from being stuck in Gaza,” said Bahaa Obeid, a 25-year-electrician who built the boat with his lawyer cousin Mohamed Obeid, also 25.

The friends spent three months collecting 1,000 green bottles and welding sheets of metal together to make the frame on which the bottles were fitted. It cost $500 to create their four-metre boat.

“It took some time to make because we only had six hours of electricity a day,” said Bahaa.

“It’s something new, maybe a bit bizarre,” Mohamed said.

The friends use the vessel to go fishing or cruise around the beach, within the Israeli imposed travel limits of course.

Some on Twitter have been asking if, following this venture, Israel will increase its blockade to include plastic bottles.
