August 28, 2015 at 11:56 am

Mohamed El-Baradei, former director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and former vice president of Egypt, caused controversy yesterday after tweeting about Egypt and Syria.

El-Baradei tweeted: “From a purely logical standpoint: When we abort the dream of the youth, repress them, and throw them in prison, we are also eliminating the future of a nation #their_freedom_is_our_freedom.”

In another tweet on the Syrian crisis he said: “After 4yrs of Syria’s pulverization & terror rising, we are now told only political solution possible! Has life ever mattered to protagonists?”

Twitter users have reacted differently to the El-Baradei’s comments with some coming out in support of those detained while others support Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi.

El-Baradei caused controversy previously when he tweeted on the anniversary of the Rabaa Massacre: “May God have mercy on us all and may He guide us down the right path.” Many were shocked by this tweet as it is widely believed that he was involved in the massacre as he was a member of the Salvation Front which contributed to the incitement against President Mohamed Morsi and the coup against him.
