Jordan’s King Abdullah warns Israel over changes to Al-Aqsa Mosque

Jordan’s King Abdullah II warned Israel on Thursday against any change to the status quo in Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rest of the Noble Sanctuary.

The Jordanian monarch made his remarks during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Amman. Ban was in Jordan after visiting the occupied Palestinian West Bank and Israel where he met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Royal Court said that the king had stressed his country’s role in defending Jerusalem and all of its religious and historical sites as the legal guardian of the Islamic and Christian holy places. “The achievement of a just and comprehensive peace, on the basis of a two-state solution, is the only way out of the crisis in the region,” a spokesman added.

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces have erupted in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza Strip since the beginning of October over repeated incursions by Jewish settlers at the Noble Sanctuary of Al-Aqsa.
