Analysts: Obama uses one-state solution to impose two-state solution on Netanyahu

A serious and worrying trend in the United States strategy towards the Palestinian cause seems to be emerging with senior officials in the State Department and the White House saying the situation in the West Bank favours a one-state for two people solution to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The special assistant to President Barack Obama for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf region, Robert Malley said that a new reality was imposed on the West Bank, which does not only undermine the prospect of reaching a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians, but also lowers the chances of renewed negotiations.

Malley explained that Obama will ask Netanyahu to explain what he intends to do in order to prevent the one-state for two people solution.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported US State Department spokesman John Kirby reiterating similar statements saying: “Netanyahu has repeatedly said that he rejects the one-state solution, so the question now is what will Netanyahu do to prevent this scenario from happening?”

The Israeli analyst, Barack Rapid said Malley is one of many US administration officials who believe that the United States should develop a new policy to deal with “the death of a two-state solution”, and its repercussions on US-Israeli relations and on the common interests between the two countries.

Observers believe the US have two options: to pressure Netanyahu who strongly opposes the one-state solution to provide practical solutions to the conflict, or to show that Netanyahu does not have a solution and is not interested in finding steps to prevent the one-state solution which is imposed by the Israeli settlements.
